Northwest Reproductive Sciences Symposium (NWRSS) 2026

PROJECT SUMMARY On June 24-26, 2026, the 20th Northwest Reproductive Science Symposium (NWRSS) meeting will be held at the Best Western Plus Hood River Inn and Conference Center in Hood River, Oregon and hosted by the Oregon National Primate Research Center (ONPRC), which is a part of Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). This long-standing meeting began in 1989 as the Washington State University (WSU) and the University of Idaho (UI) annual joint mini-symposium, but now organization and hosting rotates biennially between WSU/UI, Oregon State University (OSU), and ONPRC/OHSU. The NWRSS scientific program showcases reproductive science- related research being conducted primarily in the Pacific Northwest region and includes topics such as fertility and contraception, developmental biology, reproductive aging, environmental toxicology, and disease therapies to improve human reproductive and developmental health. Our overall objective is to promote the exchange of scientific information in an informal setting to advance our understanding of important events that occur throughout the entire life process. NWRSS organizers and participants remain committed to providing a safe and professional environment to foster the sharing of ideas and are pleased to welcome basic scientists, clinicians, and other leaders working in the reproductive or developmental biology field to the meeting. Because most of the attendees have historically been trainees, the NWRSS provides unique networking opportunities for undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows to interact with other trainees, early-stage investigators, and established scientists. NWRSS also seeks to support career development at multiple levels with encouraged participation from trainees in all aspects of meeting organization. To help facilitate this, an ad hoc trainee committee is established each year with representatives from all participating universities to oversee abstract submission and serve as session chairs during the meeting. Similar to previous years, at least one preeminent leader in the reproductive sciences will deliver a keynote address with additional prominent speakers invited from each university or chosen from the submitted abstracts. Due to shared interests in reproductive physiology and the relatively close proximity of attendees, many lasting and productive collaborations have arisen from these gatherings, and this is expected to continue at the 20th NWRSS meeting.

This has worked extremely well for delivering this experience to a limited number of youth each year.

PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT The Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCC) of Northwestern University, as an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, has excelled as a Lead Academic Participating Site (LAPS) within the NCI National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN). LCC aims to build upon its established infrastructure to drive innovation in cancer clinical trials, particularly early-phase and multi-center studies, while prioritizing health and expanding access to populations across our catchment area. Through our robust leadership, strong operational framework, and extensive network of integrated component sites, we strive to deliver high-quality, impactful clinical trials that advance cancer care. By aligning scientific expertise, operational efficiency, and community engagement, the LCC will continue to enhance trial accrual and expand access to cutting-edge treatments for patients. LCC members play pivotal roles in the NCTN through leadership positions and scientific contributions that shape trial design and implementation. Faculty serve as national PIs, protocol chairs, and committee leaders across multiple cooperative groups, including Alliance, ECOG-ACRIN, SWOG, and NRG Oncology. For example, Dr. Al B. Benson III serves as Vice Chair of ECOG-ACRIN, co-chair of the Cancer Care Delivery Research Committee, and chair of several critical protocols. Dr. Daniela Matei leads translational science initiatives for NRG and chairs high-impact protocols in gynecological oncology. LCC investigators are also actively engaged in the development of innovative trials, such as leveraging ctDNA biomarkers in pancreatic cancer, led by Dr. Akhil Chawla through the Alliance cooperative group, and evaluating novel symptom science approaches, spearheaded by Dr. Sheetal Kircher within ECOG-ACRIN. This comprehensive engagement ensures that the LCC is a vital driver of innovation and collaboration within the NCTN. Over the last 5 years, LCC has focused on expanding clinical trials to 14 Network Locations which have been added as integrated components to the LAPS grant. Expansion network locations will significantly enhance the LCC's ability to increase accrual to NCTN trials by bringing clinical research opportunities closer to patients across the catchment area, thereby reducing barriers to participation and promoting access to cutting-edge cancer care. Over 900 patients were accrued to NCTN interventional trials during the past funding period. By aligning scientific expertise, operational efficiency, and community engagement, the LCC will continue to enhance trial accrual and expand access to cutting-edge treatments for patients, improving outcomes and reducing disparities.

NOT-DA-21-033 Investigation of the neurobiological mechanisms that mediate fentanyl-induced elevations in risk taking in rats

Project Summary Despite available pharmacotherapies, relapse rates of opioid use disorder continue to rise, suggesting targets of these treatments, such as mechanisms mediating drug craving, may not be the only factors driving relapse. A potential cognitive target that has remained underexamined, but holds significant promise, is the impaired deci- sion making and elevated risk taking observed during abstinence from opioid use. A larger concern is that indi- viduals who intentionally use fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid, underestimate their risk of overdose. This sug- gests these individuals are impaired in their ability to evaluate options associated with rewards and risks of adverse outcomes. The neural mechanisms by which synthetic opioids impact these processes to increase risk taking, however, are unknown. This knowledge gap poses a critical barrier to understanding the factors that promote recurrent relapse. The long-term goal of our research is to identify neural mechanisms responsible for fentanyl-induced elevations in risk taking after prolonged abstinence so as to develop strategies to mitigate ef- fects of opioids on risk taking. To meet this goal, we use a rat model of risk taking that recapitulates real-life decision making in that it incorporates both reward and risk of punishment. Using this model, we have established a role for basolateral amygdala (BLA) projections to the nucleus accumbens shell (NAcS), as well as specific cell populations within the NAcS, in this form of decision making. We have also shown fentanyl self-administration causes enduring increases in risk taking after protracted abstinence from fentanyl. Our central hypothesis is that dysfunction in these neural mechanisms that subserve risk taking under drug-naïve conditions is responsible for fentanyl-induced increases in risk taking. We will test this hypothesis using a combination of optogenetics, ex vivo electrophysiology and fiber photometry in rats with a history of fentanyl self-administra- tion. Aim 1 will use optogenetics to determine if activation of BLA projections to the NAcS rescues effects of fentanyl on risk taking. We will also use ex vivo electrophysiology to identify if fentanyl-induced elevations in risk taking during abstinence are associated with altered glutamatergic transmission between BLA and NAcS cells that express either dopamine D2 receptors (NAcSD2Rs) or dopamine D1 receptors (NAcSD1Rs). Aim 2 will deter- mine the impact of fentanyl on encoding of risk- and reward-related information in NAcS during risk taking as well as on NAcSD2R long-range projections and their association with elevated risk taking. We will use fiber pho- tometry and optogenetics to record from and manipulate, respectively, NAcSD2Rs and NAcSD1Rs during risk taking in fentanyl-exposed rats. We will use ex vivo electrophysiology to assess if fentanyl-induced elevations in risk taking are associated with changes in inhibitory transmission between NAcSD2Rs and the ventral pallidum, a region heavily innervated by NAcSD2Rs and necessary for risk taking. Together, these findings will identify the neural substrates by which fentanyl increases risk taking after prolonged abstinence and thus reveal novel ther- apeutic strategies to reduce opioid-induced elevations in risk taking and, consequently, potential relapse.

Nothing about us without us: Integrating the voices of people who use drugs into HIV resource allocation using large language models

NIDA - National Institute on Drug Abuse

This project will develop and apply a novel, data-driven modeling approach to guide HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) prevention resource allocation among people who use drugs (PWUD) in the United States. Despite advances in HIV prevention and treatment, including long-acting injectable ART, the United States continues to fail to meet the needs of PWUD, a population central to intersecting HIV, HCV, and overdose crises. A key reason is the absence of a rapid, scalable, and comprehensive way to capture and act on the preferences and behaviors of PWUD. Revolutionary advances in large language models (LLMs) now make it possible to create highfidelity “digital twins” — artificial-intelligence powered simulations of individuals that reflect their intervention preferences and even behaviors. Using a community-based participatory process, we will train an LLM on data from multiple PWUD cohorts to generate PWUD digital twins that simulate locally-specific intervention preferences. These digital twins will be integrated into an epidemic and economic model that simulates HIV and HCV transmission, overdose, and related complications, across numerous jurisdictions in the United States. The integrated modeling framework will be used to evaluate the impact and cost-effectiveness of different HIV/HCV prevention and treatment strategies, including responses to potential funding constraints. Epidemic model outputs will be shared through an interactive dashboard designed in consultation with public health departments. Ultimately, our project aims to improve intervention implementation and reduce HIV, HCV, and overdose. Our project includes the following activities: 1) Co-design, development, and validation of a PWUD-informed LLM. 2) Digital twin simulations within a HIV/HCV transmission and overdose model to inform resource allocation. 3) Dissemination and implementation of the epidemic and resource allocation dashboard to county health departments. The proposed research will enable rapid, data-driven evaluation of prevention strategies and resource allocation options. It aligns with the NIH Office of AIDS Research priority to reduce new HIV infections and address HIV coinfections.
