Purdue Biomaterials and Biointerfaces Training Program

The Purdue Biomaterials and Biointerfaces Training Program (PUBB) will prepare graduate students to become leaders in the design, characterization, and application of engineered biological systems. This program addresses a growing national need for scientists who can integrate in vitro, in vivo, and ex vivo experimentation with advanced microscopy, materials design, and computational modeling to improve biomaterials and biointerfaces that mimic native environments for biomedical applications while also limiting the use of animal models. The focus of the program is the use of materials to influence basic cellular processes for applications including tissue engineering, wound healing, and disease treatment. Trainees will receive rigorous, cross-disciplinary training that emphasizes scientific rigor, research reproducibility, and ethical conduct, with a strong foundation in engineering principles, preparing them for impactful careers in the biomedical research workforce. The program builds upon significant institutional and commercial investments and draws on a collaborative team of faculty with expertise in biomaterials, biointerfaces, imaging sciences, and computational design. Trainees will engage in mentored research experiences and develop individualized training plans to cultivate critical thinking, quantitative skills, and interdisciplinary approaches to solve complex biomedical problems. A framework that includes formative and summative assessment ensures effective mentor–trainee communication, promotes accountability, and supports steady progress toward research and professional milestones. This will build their technical and operational skills. The curriculum includes technical courses in imaging, biomaterials characterization, and data analysis, as well as professional development opportunities such as scientific communication workshops, grant writing, teaching, and exposure to regulatory, commercialization, and intellectual property issues in biotechnology. All students will participate in a required internship through established partnerships. These internships provide hands-on experience in biotechnology and pharmaceutical settings and prepare trainees to translate their academic training into professional careers. Outreach partnerships with the Colorado Rocky Mountain School High School High Scholars (HS²) program will prepare trainees to communicate science effectively to broad audiences and foster future interest in biomedical research. PUBB is committed to providing a supportive training environment where all trainees have the resources and guidance needed to succeed. Mentors will participate in formal mentoring training to strengthen their effectiveness. Career outcomes of all trainees will be tracked and published to promote transparency and guide future cohorts. Collectively, PUBB will equip the next generation of biomedical researchers to use fundamental principles across materials design, engineering, and cell biology to improve innovation and translation, fulfilling the NIH mission to improve health through rigorous and collaborative biomedical research.

Purdue Interdisciplinary Cancer Research Training

ABSTRACT To train the next generation of cancer researchers with interdisciplinary team science expertise, we propose establishing the Purdue Interdisciplinary Cancer Research Training (PICRT) program. PICRT leverages the research strength and breadth of the Purdue University Institute for Cancer Research (PICR), a longstanding NCI-designated basic science cancer center. The PICRT program fills a significant gap as, despite the strengths of PICR, there are currently no existing NIH training opportunities for Ph.D. students with a focus on cancer research at Purdue. PICRT is designed to train Ph.D. students in interdisciplinary knowledge, skills, and innovative critical thinking across cancer research domains. These competencies are essential for trainees to effectively collaborate in multidisciplinary teams, driving progress from basic discovery and prevention to treatment and clinical application. The objectives for the proposed training program are: 1) enhance knowledge and skills in interdisciplinary cancer research; 2) deliver enhanced training to increase interdisciplinary and collaborative cancer team science competence; 3) increase trainee cancer research career awareness and provide professional development opportunities and enhanced effective leadership skills. The PICRT program includes 35 preceptors distributed across the three broad interdisciplinary research Scientific Programs of PICR: Cell Identity and Signaling (CIS), Drug Delivery and Molecular Sensing (DDMS), and Targets, Structures, and Drugs (TSD). The composition of the preceptor pool spans 12 departments, including Biology, Industrial and Molecular Pharmaceutics, Biochemistry, and Chemical Engineering. The proposed program is led by a multi-PI team of leaders in cancer research with diverse research backgrounds and approaches, long-standing strengths in graduate education and administration, and substantial institutional support. Our program novelty comes from overcoming barriers that insulate researchers from working together as interdisciplinary research teams, using previous successful curricular development to enhance skills in working in interdisciplinary teams. In addition to more traditional training program components, novel aspects of PICRT are comprised of a course that includes training in interdisciplinary team science, clinical cancer applications, an embedding program in different interdisciplinary laboratories, opportunities to organize PICR events, and leadership experience in cancer-focused service learning/community projects. Our vision is that these broadly trained basic cancer researchers will be well suited to work in teams to identify, develop, and implement cancer prevention and treatment strategies in partnerships with clinicians. The robust interdisciplinary research environment at PICR, the excellent preceptor and Ph.D. pool, the strong leadership team, and the substantial institutional support poise us well to successfully train the next generation of highly competent cancer researchers and fill the gap at Purdue and the overall cancer research workforce.

Quantitative Cell, Molecular, and Developmental Biology (QCMDB) Training Program

This is a new proposal to develop a Quantitative Cell, Molecular, and Developmental Biology (QCMDB) Training Program at Northwestern University. The QCMDB Training Program will support comprehensive pre-doctoral graduate training in the biomedical sciences, focusing on the cellular, molecular, and developmental mechanisms used in biological systems and targeted by diseases impacting human health. The mission of the QCMDB Training Program is to develop PhD students with a broad understanding across biomedical disciplines while instructing them with the skills to think critically, conduct rigorous scientific reasoning and practice, and communicate their work to a broad range of audiences. The outcome of this mission will be the development of a modern biomedical workforce that will populate every niche of society, ranging from academia, education, industry, and law, to the government. The objectives of the QCMDB Training Program are designed in alignment with NIGMS goals for predoctoral training and are organized into three interrelated areas: Foundational Biomedical Training and Education, Communication and Collaboration in Research, and Career Exploration and Development. Program goals are achieved through structured didactic coursework and enrichment activities, which are constantly evolving to meet the challenges contemporary PhD students face. The desired outcome is to create a supportive and safe scientific training environment that will set all trainees on a trajectory toward independence in thought and action. QCMDB trainees will be selected from two integrated interdepartmental graduate programs: the Interdisciplinary Biological Sciences Graduate Program and the Driskill Graduate Program in the Life Sciences. Students will be appointed to the QCMDB Training Program at the beginning of their second year and supported for two years. The 28 faculty preceptors in the Program are drawn from four departments across two schools and represent the full range of research fields that compose modern and quantitative cell, molecular, and developmental biology. QCMDB preceptors are proactive in developing excellence in training and mentoring, and preceptors will be required to regularly receive training in mentorship and best practices to promote rigorous, safe, and supportive research training environments for all trainees. Northwestern University's commitment to the Training Program provides funds for two affiliate trainee slots in addition to the eight NIGMS-funded slots requested. The affiliate slots expand the impact of the training program by increasing the number of trainees who will directly benefit from all program activities. By the end of the funding period, 25 QCMDB trainees will be equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills to address outstanding problems in contemporary biomedical science from broad perspectives.

Re-entry to Active Research Program

The Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems (CBET) and the Division of Chemistry (CHE) are conducting a Re-entry to Active Research (RARE) program to reengage, retrain, and broaden participation within the academic workforce. The primary objective of the RARE program is to catalyze the advancement along the academic tenure-track of highly meritorious individuals who are returning from a hiatus from active research. By providing re-entry points to active academic research, the RARE program will reinvest in the nation s most highly trained scientists and engineers, while broadening participation and increasing diversity of experience. A RARE research proposal must describe potentially transformative research that falls within the scope of participating CBET or CHEprograms. The RARE program includes two Tracks to catalyze the advancement of investigators along the academic tenure system after a research hiatus, either to a tenure-track position or to a higher-tenured academic rank. Track 1 of the RARE program reengages investigators in a competitive funding opportunity with accommodations for gap in record that are a result of the research hiatus. A Track 1 proposal will follow the budgetary guidelines of the relevant CBET program for an unsolicited research proposal or the relevant CHE Disciplinary Research program. Track 2 retrains investigators for whom the research hiatus has led to the need for new or updated techniques, such that retraining is required to return the investigator to competitive research activity. A description of how these new techniques will lead to competitive research in CBET or CHE programs is required. A Track 2 proposal budget will include only funds necessary for specific retraining activities, such as travel to a workshop or conference, workshop registration fees, a retraining sabbatical, or seed funding to support collection of preliminary data (including salary support, equipment usage fees, materials, and/or supplies). Reliable, Explainable, Accountable, Safe, Open Network Artificial Intelligence Consortium of Research (REASON-AI)

Background and Significance: Although artificial intelligence (AI) has been developed and applied in medical disciplines and settings for decades, recent acceleration of its development has yielded both attention and greater adoption. AI’s essence is learning from complex data, and applying lessons learned in many ways. AI technology is embedded into diagnostic devices and strategies, but numerous challenges with AI abound. Rapid evolution of the field has challenged legislators, policy makers, and regulators to maintain safety while facilitating innovation. Many AI algorithms and tools have not delivered on the promise of AI-assisted care. This project will create the Reliable, Explainable, Accountable, Safe, Open Network Artificial Intelligence Consortium of Research (REASON-AI CORE). Goals are to create and build a community of practice for sharing recent research, operations, policy developments, opportunities, innovations, and partnerships in AI; to assemble, synthesize, assess, and disseminate evidence about AI and its impact; and to facilitate processes and pathways for translation of AI from research to practice. Strategic Plan: Our key approaches will provide research summit conference series; Cyberseminar series; "Let’s Chat about AI" longitudinal discussion; engagement of interested parties; systematic review; subject-matter expertise consultation; training and professional develoment; guidance for infrastructure, science, & operations; an expert advisory panel meeting series; and selection of pilot projects to advance AI in the VA. Innovation: Our conference series will present new findings and developments. “Let’s Chat about AI” will provide a new forum for discussion. The systematic review will provide a summary of core literature never previously assembled or reported. Pilots will provide the VA with new and essential approaches for research, implementation, iteration, and evaluation. Training will develop the AI workforce. Our hope is that this work will lead to an expansion of AI experience as scientists and partners continue to pursue funding and other resources and support for research and operations as a result, in part, of REASON- AI’s facilitation. The work that REASON-AI will conduct, as described in this proposal, has not been conducted previously in the VA. Coordination, Collaboration, & Partnerships: The primary partner is the VA National Artificial Intelligence Institute, created in 2019. Additional partners will include the VA Informatics and Computing Infrastructure, the Office of Information and Technology, and the Office of the Chief AI Officer. We are also working closely with several QUERI investigators as co-investigators on this project, to provide important connection to QUERI in terms of building impact and pathways to implementation. Management Plan: The Multiple Principal Investigators are Michael Weiner (Contact PI), Michael Matheny, and Matthew Samore. Collaborating sites include academic affiliates (Vanderbilt University and University of Utah), as well as VA sites in Indianapolis, Bedford, and Ann Arbor.

Research and Mentoring Program for the Surgical Care of Older Adults

ABSTRACT For this project, I plan to use my experience in surgical outcomes research in order to support and train surgeon scientists focused on the care of older adult surgical patients while leverage existing infrastructure and resources available at Weill Cornell Medicine-NewYork Presbyterian. With the help of experienced mentors and the strong team that I have built, our group will identify variations in care and outcomes in older adults undergoing surgery with a particular focus on adults with difficult social situations or from low socioeconomic backgrounds. We will combine Weill Cornell Medicine’s Architecture for Research Computing in Health (ARCH) databases and prospectively collected, geriatric specific measures, such as time to first goals of care conversation, time to first mobilization, and delirium incidence to identify variations in care practices and outcomes for older adults undergoing surgery. We will use qualitative methods to investigate patient anxiety around decisions for surgery and the role of caregivers and their burden. Our goal will be to contribute to improving the care for older adults undergoing surgery and establish a robust research and training infrastructure that will strengthen a resilient surgical workforce. Growing our already active high-quality patient-oriented research (POR) program in geriatric surgery, we will focus on optimizing perioperative care, surgical decision making, and on training surgeon scientists in the study of the older surgical patient. We will conduct new and innovative research in areas identified in the American College of Surgeons Optimal Resources for Geriatric Surgery, particularly in frailty assessment, preoperative optimization, quality of life in older adults, and surgical risk stratification, and post- surgical recovery. We will use data and experience from this K24 in order to position my team for additional R01 funding and my trainees for K grant funding mechanisms.

Research Training in Data Science for Health in Rwanda

PROJECT SUMMARY The U2R Research Training Program (RTP) in Data Science for Health is a partnership among Washington University in St. Louis (WashU) in United States (US), the University of Rwanda (UR), and the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) both from Rwanda, to develop a sustainable research workforce capable of applying data science and artificial intelligence (AI) to address major public health challenges shared by Rwanda and the US. Cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes, HIV, and emerging infectious diseases remain major public health priorities in the US and globally, requiring innovative analytical approaches for disease surveillance, prevention, and healthcare decision-making. Rwanda's simultaneous burden of communicable and noncommunicable diseases creates a unique "perfect public health storm," providing an exceptional natural laboratory for developing and evaluating data science methods applicable to complex, multimorbid populations in both countries. The proposed research training program must be conducted in Rwanda because it provides unique scientific resources not readily available in the US. Rwanda is developing nationally integrated health information systems that support longitudinal, population-level health data across multiple levels of care while undergoing a rapid epidemiologic transition characterized by overlapping infectious and chronic diseases. This combination of integrated health data and a dual disease burden provides opportunities to develop, validate, and translate analytical methods, predictive models, and AI applications that cannot readily be replicated within the fragmented US healthcare data environment. The resulting innovations will strengthen disease surveillance, precision public health, chronic disease management, and preparedness for emerging infectious diseases in both Rwanda and the US. To capitalize on these opportunities, the U2R RTP provides interdisciplinary graduate training in data science, computer science, statistics, biomedical sciences, epidemiology, and public health. The program supports MSc, PhD, postdoctoral, and junior faculty trainees through integrated coursework, mentored research, grant and manuscript writing, multidisciplinary team science, and institutional capacity strengthening. By training investigators capable of transforming complex health data into actionable evidence, the program strengthens disease surveillance, informs health policy, accelerates scientific discovery, and improves healthcare delivery. The U2R RTP establishes a sustainable Excellence for Data Science for Health in Rwanda while fostering equitable scientific partnerships between Rwanda and the US. The research workforce, analytical methods, and AI innovations developed through this program will advance global health security, improve management of communicable and noncommunicable diseases, and generate scalable approaches that strengthen biomedical research and public health practice in both countries.

Scaling up AUD Information Resources for Provider Education: The Behavioral Health Counseling Competencies AUD Training Suite Project Summary The alcohol treatment gap is a multi-dimensional phenomenon that requires intervention related to public awareness, access to specialty care, and improvement in the quality and quantity of the broader, behavioral health workforce. The current proposal targets the latter via the development of a training product designed to increase provider knowledge and skill related to alcohol misuse and AUD. This Phase I/II Fast Track STTR proposal will create a didactic and interactive simulation training that will facilitate provider use of the content and tools within NIAAA’s key dissemination resource - Rethinking Drinking. The product will incorporate two additional elements. First, content delivery will be grounded in an NIAAA-funded training program targeting four core competencies of behavioral health counseling: 1) developing a behavior change relationship, 2) providing psychoeducation, 3) setting and monitoring behavior change goals, and 4) providing behavioral skills training. Second, training technology will include proprietary conversation-simulation technology that has a 15-year track record in changing provider behaviors. The team includes the small business applicant, the primary academic partner, and the conversation simulation company. Additional content expertise will be provided by a panel of subject matter experts. The team are established independent investigators, small business award recipients, and long-standing collaborators, which enhances the feasibility and probability of success in meeting the following Specific Aims. Phase I will establish feasibility and technical merit via the development, expert panel review, and end user piloting of the first of the four-module training program – Alcohol and you, establishing a behavior change relationship. Phase II will develop Module 2 How much is too much? providing psychoeducation, Module 3 Thinking about change, goal setting and monitoring, and Module 4 Setting drinking boundaries, providing behavioral skills training and conduct a pilot randomized trial (N = 55) comparing the training suite to a dissemination as usual control using a pre-post, standardized patient design. Commercialization will occur throughout the award period and particularly in year three. The proposed project merges team expertise and technical support to create a novel training product that can increase the quality and quantity of the behavioral health workforce, thereby contributing to reductions in the alcohol treatment gap.

Security, Privacy, and Trust in Cyberspace

Our world is at a pivotal moment where the boundaries dividing the physical and social worlds from the cyber world have become blurred. Cyberspace has evolved from an interconnected digital environment into a complex and interdependent cyber ecosystem that involves hardware, software, networks, data, people, organizations, countries, and the physical world. Critical functions of everyday life are deeply intertwined with computing, including health, government, commerce, the public sphere, education, critical infrastructure, interpersonal communication, and transportation. The complexity and inter-dependencies in cyberspace can be misused and exploited by malicious actors. These in turn can trigger adverse outcomes such as disruption of critical infrastructure and systems; theft of intellectual property and sensitive data; amplification of inequalities; disclosure of private information of individuals, organizations, and governments; and threats to lives, livelihoods, and reputations. Furthermore, constant attacks on the data and assets of corporations, governments, and individuals undermine people s trust in decision-making and processes that depend critically on these cyber systems. The Security, Privacy, and Trust in Cyberspace (SaTC 2.0) program aims to build trust in global cyber ecosystems. Trust is the core tenet of this program and, for the purposes of this solicitation, is broadly defined to include our confidence in the security, privacy, and resilience of cyberspace, particularly in the face of malicious intent. Achieving this level of confidence in cyberspace requires not only understanding the vulnerabilities in a system that could be exploited and how they can be addressed, but also understanding the social and technical dimensions of trust in cyber systems, along with the educational efforts needed to increase public awareness of risks in cyberspace, and building a well-trained corps of privacy and security professionals. SaTC 2.0 spans the interests of NSF's Directorates for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE), Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MPS), Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE), and STEM Education (EDU). Proposals must be submitted pursuant to one of the following designations, each of which may have additional requirements: RES: The Research (RES) designation is the focus of the multidisciplinary SaTC 2.0 research program. RES projects are limited to $1,200,000 in total budget, with durations of up to four years. Proposals with a total budget of more than $600,000 have additional requirements including Broadening Participation in Computing and collaboration plans. RES proposals may include an optional Transition to Education (TTE) plan with a budget up to $50,000 (within the RES total budget request) to co-evolve novel educational initiatives in the context of the proposed research. EDU: The Education (EDU) designation is used to identify proposals focusing on education and workforce training in building trust in security, privacy, and resilience of cyberspace. EDU proposals are limited to $500,000 in total budget, with durations of up to three years. EDU proposals that primarily focus on education research with demonstrated collaboration, as reflected in the PI team between cybersecurity subject matter experts and education researcher(s), may request an additional $100,000 beyond the $500,000 limit. SEED: The Seedling (SEED) category is intended for special topics defined by accompanying Dear Colleague Letters. SEED projects are limited to $300,000 in total budget, with durations of up to two years.

ABSTRACT There is a pressing need for innovative and translational science to address the intersection of substance use disorders (SUDs) and sex. The SEx Differences EDucation in SUDs (SEEDS) program will address this need by providing early-stage investigators (ESIs) with the training and expertise needed to incorporate consideration of substance use and sex differences as essential elements of their research via a mix of formal didactic modules, “hands-on” experiential learning opportunities, and networking facilitation. The overarching goal of SEEDS is to increase the pool of investigators incorporating substance use and sex-related outcomes in their research. SEEDS will leverage the unique array of research infrastructure, program partnerships, and deep bench of talented, experienced research mentors that exists at MUSC and across the nation to achieve this goal by delivering state of the science mentorship, training, and career development programming to ESIs and to ensure a well-trained workforce is equipped to address issues critical to women’s and men’s health and substance use. Specifically, SEEDS consists of: (1) comprehensive and intensive mentored pilot project research experiences to enable promising ESIs to become impactful independent investigators incorporating substance use outcomes and consideration of sex in research designs and analyses; (2) access to didactic material in (a) research methodology (i.e., responsible conduct of research, experimental design, and research methods including statistical analysis); (b) grantsmanship; and (c) track-specific research foci on the intersection of sex differences and SUDs; (3) ongoing access to technical consultation to facilitate pilot project completion and career development (e.g., biostatistical consultation, research ethics, human subjects protection); (4) additional opportunities, including travel, to extend dissemination efforts and foster interdisciplinary collaboration.
