The National Institutes of Health (NIH), including all of its Institutes and Centers, plans to publish a Notice of Funding Opportunity inviting eligible colleges, universities, and nonprofit organizations to apply for the NIH Research Evaluation and Commercialization Hub (REACH) program. The REACH program helps move promising biomedical discoveries from academic research into real-world products that can improve patient care and public health. Through this opportunity, NIH plans to fund five new academic entrepreneurship hubs. These hubs will support researchers by providing early-stage funding, technical and business resources, and mentorship in product development and commercialization. The hubs will focus on high-priority technologies that align with NIH's mission. Together, the funded hubs will form a technology development consortium that will help: Identify the most promising academic biomedical technologies; Fund early product-development work, such as feasibility studies, prototypes, and proof-of-concept studies; Provide access to expertise in science, regulation, reimbursement, business, law, and project management; and Offer entrepreneurship training and hands-on commercialization experience. Public-private partnerships and non-federal matching funding will be important to the program's success. The five awardees will build on lessons learned from previous REACH hubs and support the goals of the Phase 0 Proof of Concept Partnership pilot program, as authorized by the 2011 SBIR/STTR Reauthorization Act (P.L. 112-81 Section 5127) and extended through fiscal year 2031 under the Small Business Innovation and Economic Security Act (P.L. 119-83). Project Summary. Improving the health of all Americans requires a well-trained and highly skilled biomedical PhD workforce that will ultimately drive scientific breakthroughs and innovation in life-saving medical research. NIH support for comprehensive pre-doctoral training programs is vital because the evolving career landscape for biomedical PhD graduates demands a robust and flexible set of competencies to complement research expertise. In response, PhD programs must increasingly emphasize cultivating transferable competencies and skills that equip students for long-term success across the biomedical professions. These proficiencies are critical for graduate students to flourish in today’s complex work environments, adapt to change, and lead scientific and organizational innovation. To succeed in this dynamic scientific and biomedical climate, PhD students must acquire broad professional skills that extend beyond their technical research expertise including effective scientific communication, grant writing, ethical research conduct, rigor and reproducibility, acquisition of computational tools to manage complex data, resource management, leadership, mentoring, and career guidance. From 2001 to 2025, our previous Loma Linda University (LLU)-NIH Initiative for Maximizing Student Development Program (IMSD) R25 program trained and graduated a large cohort of PhD students that successfully transitioned into the biomedical workforce, becoming experts and leaders in their respective fields. The present application proposes a plan to implement, in a personalized fashion, the new LLU Basic Biomedical Research T32 Program (LLU-BBR T32), which will entail a dynamic, skill-building co-curriculum aimed at enhancing the research and professional proficiency of graduate students enrolled in the LLU School of Medicine’s Integrative Biomedical Graduate Studies (IBGS) PhD program. The IBGS involves two basic biomedical departments, several autonomous centers of biomedical research excellence (COEs), and four modern PhD biomedical tracks. The Specific Aims are: Aim 1: Recruit and support five new PhD students per year in the LLU-BBR T32 program, thereby sustaining a pipeline of highly skilled biomedical researchers. Aim 2: Provide a supportive academic and financial training environment designed to achieve a 90% PhD completion rate within five years, in alignment with national benchmarks for timely degree completion. Aim 3: Enhance the Trainees’ academic and research competencies through an individualized training plan integrating rigorous coursework, research milestones, mentoring, and professional development. T32 Trainees will participate in a Personalized Training Program (PTP) to acquire additional skills and career development starting the summer before the first year of graduate school and lasting during their tenure in the PhD program. The T32 program's proposed enhanced curriculum, training plan, and outcomes will provide Trainees with the necessary professional and scientific skills to increase their likelihood of successful completion of the PhD degree in a timely manner and transition to a biomedical postdoctoral career.

Longitudinal Examination of Food Insecurity and Cardiometabolic Health Risk in Hispanic/Latino Adolescents

PROJECT SUMMARY/ABSTRACT Food insecurity is a demonstrated risk factor for disordered eating (e.g., loss of control eating) and cardiometabolic health concerns, and Hispanic/Latino adolescents experience disproportionate risk. The proposed project aims to understand the mechanisms underlying the relationships amongst food insecurity, loss of control eating, and cardiometabolic health using longitudinal data capture over a 6-month study period (i.e., data collection at Baseline, 3-months, 6-months) in Hispanic/Latino adolescents. This will occur in conjunction with qualitative interviews with their caregivers (inclusive of Spanish-speaking caregivers) regarding intergenerational factors affecting eating behavior, experiences of community food access, and perceived needs pertaining to food insecurity and healthful eating. Fasting labs to assess each adolescent’s cardiometabolic health indicators will occur at Baseline and 6-month follow-up visits. These data will inform intervention development with planned steps to define modifiable targets of the intervention, adapt evidence-based intervention components tailored to participant needs, and refine intervention content based on focus group feedback (ORBIT Phase Ia and Ib). The career development plan will provide the K23 PI, Dr. Bejarano, with necessary training in community-engaged research strategies with Hispanic/Latino populations, ORBIT intervention development and clinical trials, and prevention science with mentorship from interdisciplinary experts in these areas (Drs. Zeller, Shah, Shomaker, and Jacquez). Upon completion of the K23 career development and research plan with the support of her mentorship team, Dr. Bejarano will be prepared to test an adapted intervention designed to be preventive to disordered eating and cardiometabolic health risk. This study is novel in its assessment of individual experience and qualitative perspectives of food insecurity and loss of control eating in Hispanic/Latino adolescents, in relation to longitudinal cardiometabolic health outcomes, with the inclusion of perspectives of Spanish-speaking caregivers. Dr. Bejarano’s K23 aligns with priorities stated by the National Institute of Health (NIH) and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) to investigate multi- level impacts of food insecurity, develop novel interventions, and sustain a scientific workforce prepared to contribute to the institutes’ missions to promote cardiometabolic health and prevent disease.

A Collaboratory is “a center without walls, in which the nation’s researchers can perform their research without regard to physical location, interacting with colleagues, accessing instrumentation, sharing data and computational resources, [and] accessing information in&nbsp;digital libraries.&nbsp;This BAA introduces LQC Research Thrusts (<strong>A.1.1</strong>) which are the technical areas of interest—which will be updated periodically—where partners of the LQC will pursue joint research with LPS through Incubator (<strong>A.1.2</strong>) and Collaboration (<strong>A.1.3</strong>) collaborative agreements. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) invites proposals from qualified organizations for projects that address new and emerging competitive needs of manufacturers in areas consistent with the NIST MEP Program s five Strategic Growth Areas (Supply Chain, Sustainability, Technology Acceleration, Workforce and Continuous Improvement). Funded projects will improve the competitiveness of industries in the applicant s region, and contribute to the long-term economic stability of the region. Please see the NIST MEP website, www.nist.gov/mep for details on these strategies. Competitive projects will use innovative or collaborative approaches to develop and demonstrate integrated tools, training and methodologies for growth transformation that meet the Strategic Growth Area needs and to share those approaches with the MEP National System. It is important that these awards be well aligned with the MEP national system of extension service providers in order to maximize the potential and impact of existing resources available to manufacturers through the MEP Program. NIGMS - National Institute of General Medical Sciences

PROJECT SUMMARY In this application, we seek to continue and enhance the MARC U*STAR program at the University of Rhode Island (URI). This program has had a major positive impact on the career development of our high-achieving underrepresented (UR) STEM students, with 70% (11 of 16) of our trainees matriculating into competitive graduate programs in the biomedical sciences to date. The program has also been instrumental in creating a diverse community of student biomedical scientists at URI, united by a strong sense of belonging and an enthusiasm for scientific discovery. Our institutional self-assessment provides compelling justification for an undergraduate research training program for underrepresented students at URI: 4-year graduation rates for underrepresented (UR) students (33%) continue to lag behind that for well-represented (WR) students (49%). Furthermore, rates of matriculation into advanced biomedical degree programs for UR students (15%) also continue to lag behind that for WR students (20%). Moreover, we have a robust pool of UR STEM students and a diverse pool of actively funded faculty committed to supporting the career development of UR students. Our program goals are to; 1) Develop students who are knowledgeable and well trained in the biomedical sciences, who can readily employ rigorous research methods and critical thinking to solve important scientific problems, and 2) Create a community of student scholars who enjoy a strong sense of belonging, thereby promoting a sustainable culture of undergraduate research excellence at URI. Our approach to achieving these goals will be informed by lessons learned over the course of the previous funding period; we will continue to cultivate a culture of inclusive mentoring excellence across campus by promoting and facilitating mentoring training for faculty and graduate student research mentors; we will use evidence-based approaches to monitor and support trainee mental health and wellness; we will emphasize strong foundations in quantitative and computational competencies and instill a pervasive culture of rigor and reproducibility in experimental design among our trainees. With these enhanced strategies, we expect that 1) 90% of our trainees will graduate with a baccalaureate degree in a STEM field within a 4-year period, and 2) 75% of our trainees will matriculate into PhD or MD-PhD degree programs in biomedical research fields within three years of graduating from the program, ultimately advancing the diversification of the nation's scientific workforce.

GOAL: PROVIDE HIGH QUALITY AND COMPREHENSIVE HOME VISITING SERVICES TO WOMEN, THEIR INFANTS AND FAMILIES WHO ARE LOW INCOME AND RESIDE IN HIGH-RISK COMMUNITIES; DEVELOP A SYSTEM OF ISLAND WIDE COORDINATED HOME VISITING SERVICES THAT BEFITS LONG TERM AND UNDUPLICATED OUTCOMES OF HOME VISITING SERVICES AND LOCALLY COORDINATED REFERRALS; COORDINATE NECESSARY SERVICES OUTSIDE OF HOME VISITING PROGRAMS TO ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF ENROLLED FAMILIES, AND DELIVERED SERVICES BY A COMPETENT TRAINED HOME VISITING WORKFORCE.THE AS MIECHV PLAN TO FOCUS ON IMPROVEMENT OF PERFORMANCE FOR THE MIECHV FAMILIES, ENSURING RESOURCES FOR THE NEEDS OF THE TARGET POPULATION. AS MIECHV CONTINUES TO UTILIZE THE HEALTHY FAMILIES AMERICA (HFA) MODEL TO PROVIDE QUALITY SERVICES FOR PREGNANT MOTHERS, CHILDREN, AND THEIR FAMILIES. THE AS MIECHV PROGRAM WILL CONTINUE SOME OF THE PLANS IN THE WORK PLAN FROM FY 2023. IT HAS IMPROVED THE QUALITY OF SERVICES FOR THE AT-RISK COMMUNITIES THUS FAR. OBJECTIVES: 1) IDENTIFY AND PROVIDE COMPREHENSIVE HOME VISITING SERVICES TO IMPROVE OUTCOMES FOR ELIGIBLE FAMILIES LIVING IN-AT RISK COMMUNITIES; 2) STRENGTHEN AND IMPROVE PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES THAT ADDRESS PREVENTIVE AND PRIMARY CARE SERVICES FOR PREGNANT MOTHERS, INFANTS, AND CHILDREN UNDER THE TITLE V OF THE SOCIAL SECURITY ACT; 3) IMPROVE COORDINATION OF SERVICES IN AT-RISK COMMUNITIES. 4) CONTINUE TO PARTNERSHIP WITH LOCAL PARTNERS REGARDING REFERRAL COORDINATION AND EXPANSION OF HOME VISITING SERVICES TO THE OUTER ISLAND; 5) CONTINUE TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF REFERRALS TO ADDITIONAL SERVICES WHEN A PARTICIPANT NEED IS IDENTIFIED FROM UTILIZING THE SCREENING TOOLS FOR DEVELOPMENTAL DELAY SERVICES, DEPRESSION, TOBACCO CESSATION, SUBSTANCE USE, MENTAL HEALTHCARE, INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE, OR CHILD ABUSE/NEGLECT; 6) CONTINUE TO IDENTIFY AND PROVIDE TRAINING AND SERVICES RELEVANT TO HIGH QUALITY HOME VISITING AND EARLY CHILDHOOD SERVICES TO CONTINUE OBTAIN A COMPETENT QUALIFIED WORKFORCE FOR HIGH QUALITY SERVICE DELIVERY WHILE ENCOURAGING AND EMPOWERING SELF-DEVELOPMENT. BY SEPTEMBER 29, 2026- 1). AS WILL INCREASE ENROLLMENT OF EXPECTANT MOTHERS, 1ST TRIMESTER IN THE PROGRAM FROM 45% TO 50%. 2). AS WILL IMPROVE FAMILY RETENTION FOR ENROLLED FAMILIES UP TO 5%. 3). AS MIECHV IN MANU’A WILL INCREASE THE NUMBER OF FAMILIES ENROLLED IN THE PROGRAM UP TO 3 FAMILIES. 4).AS WILL IMPROVE COORDINATION OF TRANSITION AND CONTINUE SERVING CHILDREN 5 YEARS UP TO 7 CHILDREN 5 YEARS. METHODOLOGY: THE FUNDING WILL PROVIDE THE AIGA MANUIA PROGRAM OF THE AMERICAN SAMOA MIECHV HOME VISITING SERVICES TO 225 FAMILIES FOR BOTH YEARS OF THE PROJECT PERIOD IN 15 COUNTIES OF AMERICAN SAMOA ARCHIPELAGO AND ITS OUTER ISLANDS. 1. THE GRANTEE-RECIPIENT IMPLEMENTS HEALTHY FAMILIES AMERICA (HFA), AN EVIDENCED-BASED MODEL FOR FIDELITY TO IMPROVE HOME VISITING SERVICE DELIVERY AND PERFORMANCE. 2. MATERNAL, INFANT AND EARLY CHILDHOOD HOMEVISITING GRANT PROGRAM - ANNOTATION: MARYLAND MIECHV (MD MIECHV) IS IMPLEMENTING EVIDENCE-BASED HOME VISITING (EBHV) PROGRAMS IN 19 OF THE 24 JURISDICTIONS ACROSS THE STATE IN HIGH-RISK COMMUNITIES THAT WERE IDENTIFIED IN THE NEEDS ASSESSMENT. WE HAVE BUILT A STRONG STATEWIDE PROGRAM, BUT MUST FURTHER STRENGTHEN AVAILABILITY, REACH, AND COORDINATION OF HOME VISITING SERVICES, WHILE SUPPORTING PARENT ENGAGEMENT/LEADERSHIP, HEALTH EQUITY AND WORKFORCE RETENTION. THE PROJECT GOALS WILL BE ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH ACTIVITIES THAT SUPPORT THE LOCAL IMPLEMENTING AGENCIES (LIAS) AND CONTINUED COORDINATION WITH OTHER CHILD-AND FAMILY SERVING AGENCIES AT THE STATE LEVEL. PROBLEM: THE NEEDS ASSESSMENT IDENTIFIED 19 JURISDICTIONS WITH HIGH-RISK INDICATORS. THERE WERE 23 INDICATORS ACROSS FIVE FEDERAL MIECHV DOMAINS. THE INDICATORS INCLUDE PRETERM BIRTH, ABUSE AND NEGLECT INVESTIGATION RATE, HIGH SCHOOL DROPOUT RATE, AND UNEMPLOYMENT RATE. THE DOMAINS ARE: 1) MATERNAL AND NEWBORN HEALTH, 2) CHILD INJURIES, MALTREATMENT AND REDUCTION OF EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT VISITS, 3) SCHOOL READINESS AND ACHIEVEMENT, 4) CRIME OR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND 5) FAMILY ECONOMIC SELF-SUFFICIENCY. PURPOSE: THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO IMPLEMENT AND EXPAND EBHV SERVICES IN ALL ELIGIBLE JURISDICTIONS IN MARYLAND. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: GOAL 1: IMPROVE MATERNAL, INFANT, AND EARLY CHILDHOOD HEALTH BY PROVIDING VOLUNTARY HOME VISITING SERVICES THROUGH EVIDENCE-BASED MODELS FOR FAMILIES IN AT-RISK COMMUNITIES AS IDENTIFIED BY OUR NEEDS ASSESSMENT, WHILE ALSO FOCUSING ON TARGETED OUTCOMES IN THE STATUTORILY MANDATED BENCHMARK AREAS. OBJECTIVE 1.1- SUPPORT 19 LOCAL INTERVENTIONS WITH VULNERABLE FAMILIES IN AT-RISK COMMUNITIES AS EARLY IN PREGNANCY AS POSSIBLE, USING EVIDENCE-BASED HOME VISITING (EBHV) MODELS. OBJECTIVE 1.2 -- PROVIDE LIAS WITH NEEDED SUPPORT TO POSITIVELY IMPACT FAMILIES THROUGH TRAINING, TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE, AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES. OBJECTIVE 1.3 – STRENGTHEN PROGRAM INFRASTRUCTURE TO IMPROVE PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES FOR FAMILIES RECEIVING HOME VISITING SERVICES. OBJECTIVE 1.4- CONTINUE TO IMPLEMENT MARYLAND’S CQI PLAN GOAL 2: ENSURE THE PROVISION OF HIGH-QUALITY HOME VISITING SERVICES TO ELIGIBLE FAMILIES LIVING IN AT-RISK COMMUNITIES BY, IN PART, COORDINATING WITH COMPREHENSIVE STATEWIDE EARLY CHILDHOOD SYSTEMS TO SUPPORT THE NEEDS OF THOSE FAMILIES. OBJECTIVE 2.1 - STRENGTHEN HOME VISITING SERVICES BY ASSESSING AND EVALUATING DATA QUALITY AND ENGAGING IN DATA SHARING WITH OTHER EARLY CHILDHOOD SYSTEMS AS APPLICABLE. OBJECTIVE 2.2 - PARTNER WITH CHILD-SERVING AGENCIES STATEWIDE, PUBLIC AND PRIVATE AGENCIES AS WELL AS LOCA AGENCIES AND ORGANIZATIONS QUARTERLY TO ASSURE HOME VISITING REMAINS AT THE FOREFRONT OF A ROBUST SYSTEM OF EARLY CARE. APPROACH: ? THE EBHV THAT WILL BE IMPLEMENTED ARE HEALTHY FAMILIES AMERICA (HFA) AND NURSE FAMILY PARTNERSHIPS (NFP). WE WILL ALSO EXPLORE THE IMPLEMENTATION OF MATERNAL INFANT HEALTH OUTREACH WORKER (MIHOW) IN ONE JURISDICTION. ? WE INTEND TO SERVE THE FOLLOWING JURISDICTIONS THAT WERE IDENTIFIED IN OUR STATEWIDE NEEDS ASSESSMENT: ALLEGANY COUNTY, BALTIMORE CITY, BALTIMORE COUNTY, CAROLINE COUNTY, CARROLL COUNTY, CECIL COUNTY, DORCHESTER COUNTY, GARRETT COUNTY, HARFORD COUNTY, KENT COUNTY, MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, QUEEN ANNE’S COUNTY, SOMERSET COUNTY, ST. MARY’S COUNTY, TALBOT COUNTY, WASHINGTON COUNTY, WICOMICO COUNTY, AND WORCESTER COUNTY. HOME VISITING SERVICES ARE SUPPORTED BY ONGOING TRAINING, REFLECTIVE SUPERVISION, DATA COLLECTION AND REVIEW, COORDINATED INTAKE, PROGRAM EVALUATION, CONTINUOUS QUALITY IMPROVEMENT (CQI), AND SUBRECIPIENT MONITORING. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES: GOAL: MAINTAIN FUNDING FOR EXISTING LOCAL IMPLEMENTING AGENCIES AND HOME VISITING MODELS. BY SEPTEMBER 2027, THE PROGRAM WILL: • INCREASE THE QUARTERLY ACTIVE ENROLLMENT FOR EACH MODEL TO 85% OF MAXIMUM SERVICE CAPACITY, • STRENGTHEN ARKANSAS'S NETWORK OF HV PROGRAMS AND THEIR INTEGRATION INTO EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS BY 20% AND, • MAINTAIN EXISTING COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIPS WITH STAKEHOLDERS AND BUILD ONE NEW COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIP. GOAL: PREPARE THE HV WORKFORCE BY DEVELOPING AND DELIVERING TRAINING TO HV STAFF.
