Seattle-Isfahan Sister City Advocacy (SISCA)

Free and open to the public, the fifth annual Seattle-Isfahan Sister City Advocacy (SISCA) Persian New Year (Nowruz) celebration from 12 pm to 5 pm, Sunday, March 23, 2025, will transform Seattle City Hall into a vibrant, colorful, energy-filled space. We aim to celebrate the art, culture, and traditions from the spectrum of local immigrant co-celebrant Persian-heritage cultures including Iran, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkey. The Lobby will feature displays of traditional and modern Persian artwork and craft demonstrations, as well as local Persian-focused NGOs at information tables, and a Kids Corner. The auditorium will host lively performances of dance, music, and song; speakers from across the diaspora; and elected officials. We expect 1,500 attendees with half of non-Persian-heritage. Our goal is to benefit and lift up our communities by celebrating together and to help counter the persistent negative images of so many Persianate countries that appear in U.S. media.

Grants for evidence-based reentry programs that reduce recidivism, including mentoring, job training, housing, substance abuse treatment, and family reunification.

Seattle Artist Coalition for Equitable Development

On The Block Second Saturdays is a series of monthly outdoor street markets on 11th Ave between E. Union and E. Pine every Second Saturday of the month from July through September of 2025. Created for and by local BIPOC artists, this free, all-ages event features a marketplace of over 38 local vendors selling handmade goods, vintage, street fashion, and more along with 3x3 basketball tournaments, interactive art, community activations, and over 6 hours of DJ and live performances. As an alliance among neighboring artists, cultural spaces, and small business owners, the mission of On The Block Second Saturdays is to be a conduit to sustainable opportunity, creative equity, and abundance from the ground up, amplifying local creativity and generating a safer, more connected neighborhood. This project will be completed by October 31, 2025.

12th Ave SW Block Watch Group

The residents of the 7700 block of 12th Ave SW have planned several community events. Neighbors will design and install a garden in the new roundabout at 12th Ave SW and SW Kenyon St. Planting of the circle will occur in September, with a street clean up and community celebration recognizing the improvements planned for the month of October. These activities will strengthen the connections between the longtime neighbors and newer residents by working side by implementing their shared vision for community improvements.

Southeast Seattle Education Coalition

During the next six months, the organization Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity (SEED), will host a twice-monthly seminar at 3829B South Edmunds Street, with a cohort of 12 to 15 people, whose goal will be to design a curriculum based on the insight gained from discussions about racism, sexism, ageism, and classism. This curriculum will affect societal changes for greater equity, justice and diversity in workplaces, schools and communities.

CID Community Watch

The CID Community Watch group will offer self defense workshops in January, located at 522 7th Ave S. There has been a rise of hate crimes towards Asians and Asian Americans. The workshops will be in Cantonese language for seniors and adults teaching them situational awareness, providing confidence, and if confronted with a situation that they cannot avoid a means to defend themselves. The project is free and open to the public.

AmeriCorps

Grants to organizations to engage volunteers aged 55+ in meaningful community service addressing critical needs in education, health, environment, and public safety.

Friends of Seward Park

Western Hemlocks are dying in the northwest quadrant of the Seward Park's old-growth forest located at 5895 Lake Washington Blvd. The cause and mechanism of the decline are unknown. A survey of current tree health and geographic distribution is needed. The Friends of Seward Park will work with youth from CHOOSE 180 on a hemlock survey, collecting data and training the youth in field biology and data analysis. A protocol devised by PNW ecologists and pathologists and approved by Seattle Parks will guide our work. CHOOSE 180 is a community-centered program in partnership with the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office to reduce race-based and economic disproportionality in the juvenile justice system. Friends of Seward Park will also collaborate with Forest Health Watch, provide data summaries, a preliminary analysis, and a short article submitted to an appropriate journal. This project will be completed by November 30, 2021.

Friends of Seward Park

Last summer, Friends of Seward Park, (FoSP), 5002 Lake Washington Blvd S, joined with CHOOSE 180 on a Small Sparks grant and surveyed the decline and mortality of 116 Western Hemlocks. We wish to continue ecological research, this year focusing on 100+ old-growth Douglas Firs, and a smaller number of dying Red Cedars. Once again we will have 3-5 interns from CHOOSE 180, working about 15 hours a week, in the forest, and on data mapping. FoSP will supervise the daily work at no cost; a UW intern (also at no cost) may assist. This project will be completed by November 30, 2022

Saturday Sewing Sisters

Seattle Community Sewing Circle currently has over 500 members of all ages who gather monthly at the First African Methodist Episcopal Church, 1522 14th Avenue, to work side by side connecting with each other while creating feminine care kits for schoolgirls who cannot afford feminine care products. This project will provide support of these efforts in 2 ways: 1) We will establish tool stations with assigned cart keepers who will train volunteers in the use of cutting tools, templates, snap presses, and other implements. (2) We will create a speakers program, developing several presentations for speaking engagements. This will enable us to be prepared to accept requests we receive from civic organizations, schools, churches, and professional associations to help educate hundreds of people in Seattle each year about reproductive health, the relationship between poverty, education, and employment for girls and women. This project will be completed by May 29, 2020.

Friends of SHARP Seattle

The Sharing History through Active Reminiscence and Photo-imagery (SHARP) Seattle project partners with older Black adults in Seattle's Central District located at 500 30th Ave S. Seattle, to produce a culturally celebratory group walking experience incorporating physical, social, and reminiscence activities that promote brain health, while creating an oral history archive celebrating Black life in the neighborhood. In Summer 2022, 36 Black older adult volunteers will walk in small groups along the routes while recording their stories. The resulting digital oral history archive and routes will be shared broadly with the public via a community celebration, community outreach and a SHARP Seattle website.The project is free and open to the public.

Au New You

On December 9, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., we will present a Luncheon, She's More Precious than Rubies. This event will be held at NAAM, 2300 S. Massachusetts St., Seattle, WA. The purpose of the Luncheon is to continue our mission to empower our community by providing important information to help encourage, motivate, provide medical specialists to address issues, provide information, and to help immediately maneuver through and successfully overcome the obstacles/challenges presented. Our purpose is to reach as many as possible in our community - all genders - of Seattle. Our goal is to provide information/resources to move forward and break through the confines that hold us back, and more.

Jackson Place Business Association

The independent businesses, storefronts, art studios, live/ work BIPOC, LGBTQ+ creative spaces make our neighborhood a more vibrant and desirable place to live and work. Together with our residents, people who work in the area and new visitors who discover our unique neighborhood we hope to grow a stronger sense of community through the installation of holiday lighting on our small dead-end street called the Hiawatha Arts & Business Corridor located on the 800 block of Hiawatha Place South. This project will contribute to better public safety by creating a more attractive and interesting area for visitors to discover, explore, and feel safe walking their pets at night, returning to the neighborhood through public transportation, or patronizing the storefronts or community space in the center of the block. This project will be completed by April 29, 2022.

Seattle Japanese American Citizens League

On October 21, 2017 from 8am to 6pm the Seattle Japanese American Citizens League will be hosting the 6th Annual Living Well Health Fair, located at 3001 24th Ave S at the Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church. The goal of the fair is to strengthen the Seattle API community by emphasizing good health by living well. There will be many interactive activities, and games for all to participate and to enjoy.

Slow Waters

The Slow Waters Initiative aims to enhance neighborhood safety and community well-being by reducing vehicle speeds on Waters Avenue South. A 2019 SDOT study found that average speeds exceed the 20 mph limit by 50%, with extreme cases reaching 50-75 mph. Given the high pedestrian activity—including families, children, and cyclists—traffic calming measures are essential. After evaluation, SDOT approved the installation of five speed humps as the most effective solution. This project will improve walkability, deter crime, and strengthen community connections. The Slow Waters Committee, supported by the Rainier Beach Community Club, will lead the initiative with funding from the Neighborhood Matching Fund, volunteer support, and neighborhood contributions. Implementation includes grant submission, permitting, and construction, with completion expected by summer.

Compass Housing Alliance

On September 2,2017, Compass Housing Alliance will sponsor a Back to School Carnival at Denny Park, 100 Dexter Avenue North from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. The goal of the event is to promote education, increase community engagement, and encourage park use in South Lake Union by creating a stronger sense of community.

SLU Community Council

This project will update the South Lake Union Community Council(SLUCC) website so that it will 1) describe and document SLUCC's accomplishments and current projects; 2) motivate a broad cross section of community residents, employees, and businesses to get involved. The anticipated project completion date is May 31, 2022.

Thingyverse

Thingyverse will create the nation's first touring arts performance program designed for babies and toddlers. This free and open to public performance program will consist of two workshops and 4 performances at different locations throughout Seattle starting January 2020. And the first workshop will be held at the Magnuson Community Center - 7110 62nd Ave NE.

Grants for data-driven, evidence-based law enforcement strategies including hot-spot policing, predictive analytics, and community-oriented approaches.

Columbia City Theater Group

Local artists, activists, and educators will collaborate to offer Seattle youth the opportunity to build community through production of a theatrical play, film festival, graphic-novel adaptation, and accompanying resources. These creative projects will build community and engage youth in social justice through the rich tradition of storytelling and the exploration of race, socioeconomics, education, and the arts.

Somali Community Services of Seattle

The Somali Community of Services of Seattle will be hosting the annual Somali Heritage Fest at Rainier Beach High School located at 8815 Seward Park Ave S. The festival will begin with a 4-day soccer tournament starting June 26 - June 30 from 3-7pm. Then the festival culminates with a day-long celebration on July 1, 2023 featuring Somali folk dance, spoken word, music, crafts, food and more. The event is free and open to the public.

Somali Family Safety Task Force

This project will have Intergenerational Communications Workshops that will enhance bonding between Somali teens and their mothers with the goal to strengthen relationships and foster community building in a supportive environment. Attendees of the workshops, will participate in a series of 4 workshops designed to explore relationships, promote opportunities to create positive interactions, facilitate communication skill building and peer mentoring.

Somali Community Services of Seattle

Somali Community Services of Seattle will organize a series of theater and acting trainings for youth during the summer of 2017. Participants will gain skills that will allow them to share their unique stories and experiences. They will be held twice per week beginning July 17 and concluding September 5, 2017. They will be held at the Rainier Arts Center located at 3515 S Alaska St. There will be a public talent show showcasing the youth performers on a date to be determined in the fall of 2017.

Somos de Mujeres Latinas

The Somos Mujeres Latinas Symposium is a free event that will be held over one day and will feature various speakers and networking opportunities. Highlights of the event include: Networking Sessions allow Latina women to connect with professionals and community leaders, build relationships, and explore potential collaborations. Resource Fair: A marketplace showcasing resources, services, and organizations relevant to the needs and interests of Latina women. Inspirational Keynote Speakers: Presentations by influential Latina leaders who will share their stories, insights, and advice for success. Increased empowerment and confidence among Latina women attendees. Expanded networks and connections for professional and personal growth. Enhanced knowledge and skills in leadership, financial literacy, and personal development. Strengthened sense of community and support among Latina women in our area.
