On Saturday, April 21st at First AME Church, 1522 - 14th Avenue in Seattle, the 2018 Youth Law Forum will offer 250 young people ages 8 - 18, basic instruction on navigating the juvenile justice system. A series of workshops, discussion groups, and question and answer sessions will be offered by local Police, the Sheriff's office, the Washington State Bar Association, and the UW School of Social Work. The aim is to both teach and engage our youth. Participants will also be able to explore career opportunities in the criminal justice field.

Judkins Park P-Patch gardeners and community volunteers will renovate the east entrance to Judkins P-Patch located at 24th Ave South and South Norman by replacing unsafe concrete stairs and adding a hand railing, improving basic safety and accessibility. The group will also replace the existing damaged welcome sign and repair the seed library at the north entrance, incorporating community outreach to create a welcoming space.The project will be completed in the fall of 2021.

Julefest - A Nordic Holiday Celebration

On November 20th and 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. the National Nordic Museum located at 2655 NW Market Street will host its 44th annual Julefest: A Nordic Holiday Celebration. This cultural community event transforms the Museum grounds into a traditional outdoor holiday market similar to those held throughout the Nordic region. In response to COVID-19, the NNM has moved this year's event outdoors, resulting in cost increases. Funding from the Neighborhood Matching Fund makes it possible to offer this event for free, making it affordable and accessible to all. This project will be completed by January 31, 2022.

This event will provide an opportunity for South Seattle Community to come together, meet each other, establish friendships, to encourage neighbors to look after the neighborhood and to celebrate African American History. Barbara Hainley led efforts to transform the derelict property into an award-winning park. The playground, large yard, beautiful quadrant flower gardens and adjoining P-Patch are now a favorite destination for the Whittier Heights neighborhood. We will honor Ms. Hainley via a plaque near a tree which was planted in her memory, install a new picnic table, and present a bouquet to our steadfast Seattle Parks caretaker. Games, face painting, music, hot dogs and ice cream are planned.

The memorial will be located at Sand Point Way NE and Bartlett Ave NE. In this phase of the project the group will plant 3 evergreens along Sand Point Way, 4 flowering trees along Bartlett, and low shrubs. The goal is to help heal the wounds of traumatized citizens, and remind visitors about the perils of gun violence. The triangle will have signage and talks to educate people about the unfortunate past event and to help create awareness and a safer community. This phase of the project will be completed by June 30, 2020.
