Judge Charles V. Johnson Youth Law Forum

The Charles V. Johnson Youth and Law Forum is a fun, interactive, and free community legal education program. In 2020 it will include two key activities; a courtroom visit on April 3rd; and the Forum on Saturday, April 25th from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm at First AME Church, 1522 - 14th Avenue. Two thousand twenty is the 30th Anniversary of this signature community event, continuing a legacy of informing and engaging youth.

Parents for Student Success

On Saturday, April 21st at First AME Church, 1522 - 14th Avenue in Seattle, the 2018 Youth Law Forum will offer 250 young people ages 8 - 18, basic instruction on navigating the juvenile justice system. A series of workshops, discussion groups, and question and answer sessions will be offered by local Police, the Sheriff's office, the Washington State Bar Association, and the UW School of Social Work. The aim is to both teach and engage our youth. Participants will also be able to explore career opportunities in the criminal justice field.

Judkins Park P-patch

Judkins Park P-Patch gardeners and community volunteers will renovate the east entrance to Judkins P-Patch located at 24th Ave South and South Norman by replacing unsafe concrete stairs and adding a hand railing, improving basic safety and accessibility. The group will also replace the existing damaged welcome sign and repair the seed library at the north entrance, incorporating community outreach to create a welcoming space.The project will be completed in the fall of 2021.

Nordic Museum

On November 20th and 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. the National Nordic Museum located at 2655 NW Market Street will host its 44th annual Julefest: A Nordic Holiday Celebration. This cultural community event transforms the Museum grounds into a traditional outdoor holiday market similar to those held throughout the Nordic region. In response to COVID-19, the NNM has moved this year's event outdoors, resulting in cost increases. Funding from the Neighborhood Matching Fund makes it possible to offer this event for free, making it affordable and accessible to all. This project will be completed by January 31, 2022.

Gifts Of Hope

On June 11th,2022 from 11am to 5pm the Gifts of Hope community group will have The Juneteenth: Family Reunion Community Festival located at 4520 Martin Luther King Jr Way. The festival will celebrate the celebrate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. This event will provide an opportunity for South Seattle Community to come together, meet each other, establish friendships, to encourage neighbors to look after the neighborhood and to celebrate African American History. The event is free and open to the public.

It Takes a Village

On June 19, 2021 from 11am to 6pm, Juneteenth will be celebrated at Othello Park located at 4351 S Othello St. There will be historical education on Juneteenth meaning as well as multicultural activities, dance, spoken word, music, food, and resources for the whole community.

Pan African Center for Empowerment (PACE)

Pan African Center For Empowerment (PACE) is hosting the event, Juneteenth CommUnity Celebration on The Yard. The free and open to the public event will be held on private property located at 1201 Third Ave Plaza in downtown Seattle between 9 AM to 6PM. The event will feature a youth zone, live DJ sets, spoken word, and performances curated by Black artists. This one-day community event, titled “The Yard,” is inspired by HBCU traditions and commemorates both the 10-year anniversary of PACE and the 7-year anniversary of The Union, PACE's downtown creative, cultural and media hub.

Central Area Chamber of Commerce

From 12pm - 6pm on Saturday June 15th and Sunday June 16th the Central Area Chamber of Commerce will host a celebration marking the emancipation of slavery. This year marks the 36th Juneteenth celebration at Pratt Park located at 1800 South Main Street and whose namesake, Edwin Pratt, was a trailblazer of the Civil Rights movement in Seattle. Juneteenth evokes the feeling of a family reunion, with event highlights including live music, spoken word, dance, art activities for kids, food, local small business vendors and community organizations. This year Juneteenth will also include a commemoration of the late DeCharlene Williams, the founder and long time leader of the Central Area Chamber of Commerce.

Kandelia

Kandelia's Culture Fair is an event to celebrate youth, families, diversity, and community across Seattle. Culture Fair will occur on June 3rd, 2023 from 9:30am - 1:30pm at Seattle World School (SWS). We are using SWS because it is an existing place of significance for our community and is central in the city for convenience. Culture Fair will celebrate newly arrived immigrant and refugee families. It will be a community event featuring food, music, dance, fashion, arts & crafts, sports, and people from diverse cultures. Attendees will be able to sample foods from different countries, participate in a friendly soccer game, and learn about different cultures. The event will also feature youth performances that include cultural dances, music performances, and fashion shows. Kandelia will invite immigrants and refugee families throughout Seattle. We will share the invite with our network of community partners, volunteers and the Central District neighborhood that surrounds SWS.

Kids and Paper

Starting in September of 2021, Kids and Paper plans to launch a new afterschool program to serve resettled children in grades K-5 with homework help, tutoring and healthy meals, along with programming that helps participants work on their social and emotional development through creative arts at the Magnuson Community Center located at 7110 62nd Ave NE Seattle, WA 98115. The anticipated project close out date is January 31, 2022.

One Vibe Africa

During the month of February, Kijiji Night 2020 will mark One Vibe Africa's 6th year partnering with the Seattle Art Museum to produce a free-to-the-public evening dedicated to celebrating the African Diaspora. On February 6, 2020, the spirit of an African village will be brought to life at SAM, 1300 1st Avenue from 5:00-9:00pm, through live hip-hop and traditional African musical performances, storytelling, poetry, and fresh food provided by Cafe Avole.

King County Department of Community and Human Services

King County's Best Starts for Kids levy funds grants to nonprofits providing early childhood development, youth services, family strengthening, and behavioral health services across the Seattle metropolitan area.

Friends of King Donut

A community mural will be installed at King Donuts, featuring four 6.5’ x 6’ wooden fence panels designed by a local artist. Each panel will be painted by Rainier Beach youth and community members using a color-by-number system, creating an inclusive and collaborative art piece. The mural’s design will be informed by a community event where local youth and residents contribute ideas and concept art. These events include art stations, food, and entertainment to support broad community participation and creative input. The anticipated project completion date is November 30, 2025.

Friends of Kirke Park

On September 17, 2022,3:00-7:00 pm, we will celebrate the tenth anniversary of Kirke Park, located at 7028 9th Ave NW Seattle, WA. Barbara Hainley led efforts to transform the derelict property into an award-winning park. The playground, large yard, beautiful quadrant flower gardens and adjoining P-Patch are now a favorite destination for the Whittier Heights neighborhood. We will honor Ms. Hainley via a plaque near a tree which was planted in her memory, install a new picnic table, and present a bouquet to our steadfast Seattle Parks caretaker. Games, face painting, music, hot dogs and ice cream are planned.

Asian Americans for Arts Activism - A4A

Asian Americans for Arts Activism - A4A will host a free three-day celebration of Asian Pacific Islander American heritage month. The first event will be on May 26, 2018 from 11am - 1pm at Wing Luke Museum located at 719 S King St. The second will be on May 27, 2018 from 11am - 1pm at Seattle Public Library located at 1000 4th Ave. The final event will be on May 28, 2018 from 11am - 1pm at Royal Esquire Club located at 5016 Rainier Ave S. The events will feature workshops, film, art, and food.

SouthEast Effective Development

KVRU 105.7 FM is a Southeast Seattle local community radio station founded to broadcast the diverse voices of the community. Our Pilot Mentorship Program will support Southeast Seattle youth to learn media skills and gain job readiness. After completing twelve hours of workshops over two months, they will specialize in one of three tracks: podcasting, radio broadcasting, or storytelling, and will work with a mentor to script, produce, and record content for broadcast on the station.

Lafayette PTA

The Lafayette PTA will create a free, non-denominational Winter Light Festival on the Lafayette School playground for the entire West Seattle community to enjoy December 5th and 6th from 5-7 pm at 2645 California Avenue SW. The displays will be wheelchair and stroller accessible. Free cookies, hot cocoa, and non -religious music will be provided. We want our student's light designs and art to be celebrated by our entire community. This project will be completed by January 31, 2020.

Friends of the Lake City Fred Meyer Garden Project

In Phase II, Friends of the Lake City Fred Meyer Garden Project will develop schematic design and construction drawings based on the conceptual design derived from the community outreach in Phase I. A lease agreement with Fred Meyer will be developed. Friends of the Lake City Fred Meyer Garden Project will also continue work on fundraising, business outreach, artist engagement, materials donation, and a robust public engagement process during Phase II.

Lake City Living Memorial Triangle

The Lake City Memorial Triangle will create a memorial with a beautification project to commemorate the fatal events of March 27, 2019. The memorial will be located at Sand Point Way NE and Bartlett Ave NE. In this phase of the project the group will plant 3 evergreens along Sand Point Way, 4 flowering trees along Bartlett, and low shrubs. The goal is to help heal the wounds of traumatized citizens, and remind visitors about the perils of gun violence. The triangle will have signage and talks to educate people about the unfortunate past event and to help create awareness and a safer community. This phase of the project will be completed by June 30, 2020.

Lake City Pioneer Days Parade Association

The Lake City Summer Parade is a free and family-friendly annual event that takes place in the Lake City neighborhood on August 2nd, 2025. The Lake City neighborhood is one of the most diverse and underserved neighborhoods in Seattle. The Parade is our community's biggest day of the year, attracting up to 10,000 neighbors. Since its founding in 1947, the parade is one of the few free inclusive opportunities for people to come together and celebrate our diverse community. The parade features marching bands, drill teams, community groups, governmental agencies, and local businesses. We feature colorful floats, live music, dance performances, and other festive displays representing the diverse cultures of the Seattle area. This project will be completed by October 31, 2025.

Lake City Emergency Communication Hub

The Lake City Emergency Communication Hub's Stop the Bleed (STB) project will engage the Lake City community in emergency preparation by offering the successful STB program. The STB program was developed by the American College of Surgeons to train people with little or no medical education in effective methods of preventing death from hemorrhage. These methods, the application of tourniquets, wound packing and pressure, have been proven and tested by the military in Afghanistan and Iraq. The program is very similar to the citizen CPR program. It is a free 2-hour class that includes a video, lecture, time for questions, and hands-on practice. The skills learned are applicable for mass casualty incidents such as bombings, shootings, earthquakes, traffic or train accidents and as well as individual traumas. This project will be completed by September 28, 2018.

Lake City Pioneer Days Parade Association

The Lake City Parade and Summer Festival is on Saturday August 6, 2022 from 10:30am to 6:30pm on Lake City Way NE between NE 145th and NE 125th. The festival is one of the oldest Seafair sanctioned community events, and one of the few free family-friendly events on a summer Saturday in North Seattle. It is counter-programming to the Hydro races that happen the same weekend. For those who don't enjoy, or can't afford the boat races, the Lake City Parade and Summer Festival is a perfect alternative. The festival includes music and entertainment from a spectrum of world cultures. The parade and festival have brought together and celebrated the diverse cultures in the neighborhood for decades. This year it will be an essential part of helping our community recover from the pandemic and will be the first time the community will have a chance to come together and celebrate our community since the beginning of the pandemic. This project will be completed by October 31, 2022.
