ABSTRACT WABANAKI TURTLE While Wabanaki people have conducted research activities since time immemorial to promote the health and welfare of their communities, Wabanaki citizens are underrepresented as health researchers, including at Wabanaki Public Health and Wellness (WPHW), the applicant organization for the Wabanaki Tribal Undergraduate to Graduate Training and Leadership Experiences (TURTLE) Program. WPHW serves the four federally recognized Tribes of Maine. According to WPHW’s director of research, there are fewer than five Wabanaki citizens with a postgraduate health-research training degree whose work addresses Wabanaki health disparities. The underrepresentation of Wabanaki citizens amongst health researchers is important to note because Wabanaki communities experience health disparities in comparison to the all-races Maine population. An increased representation of Wabanaki health researchers can address these disparities which include a self- reported diabetes prevalence of 17.0% in comparison to 9.6% for Maine residents. According to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, increasing the proportion of American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) health researchers can address such health disparities, underscoring the importance of training future AI/AN health researchers. To address Wabanaki health disparities we plan to create Wabanaki TURTLE, an undergraduate research training program that seeks to develop a pool of scientists to conduct research on Wabanaki and other AI/AN health and health disparities. We will develop and implement an effective training program for undergraduate students that seeks to enhance their technical, operational, and professional skills required to conduct AI/AN health research in a culturally appropriate, ethically responsible and rigorous manner. The program will support the students to complete a bachelor's degree in a biomedical field, and ultimately to transition into careers in the biomedical research workforce. Our Specific Aims are to: 1) Build WPHW’s administrative capacity to implement and evaluate Wabanaki TURTLE. 2) Develop and implement the Wabanaki TURTLE Program’s curriculum, a 12-month research training program to enhance research skills of ten Indigenous undergraduate students annually, over a 5-year period. 3) Develop new and strengthen existing partnerships with academic institutions and organizations for purposes of student recruitment, identification of mentors, and providing trainees with research experiences, career development, cohort building, and networking opportunities.

Workforce Program in the Mathematical Sciences

The long-range goal of the DMS Workforce Program is to increase the number of well-prepared U.S. citizens, nationals, and permanent residents who successfully pursue careers in the mathematical sciences and in other NSF-supported disciplines.Among intermediate goals to this end are improvements in recruitment, retention, education, and placement of trainees in the mathematical sciences. The program's primary interest is in activities centered on education through research involvement for trainees at the undergraduate through postdoctoral educational levels. Activities that broaden participation in the mathematical sciences are of significant interest to the Division of Mathematical Sciences.The program is particularly interested in activities that improve:recruitment and retention: increasing the number and diversity of U.S. students who successfully pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in mathematics and statistics;educational breadth: broadening graduate education and undergraduate education content in the mathematical sciences to prepare students for a wider range of career opportunities; andprofessional development: enhancing the professional skills of mathematical sciences postdoctoral associates, graduate students, and undergraduate students to better prepare them for both academic and nonacademic employment.The program welcomes unsolicited proposals for activities that address the program goals in innovative and creative ways. Proposals must clearly identify:the goals to be achieved;the specific new activities to be conducted, the way in which these address the goals, and the way in which the activities significantly differ from or enhance common practice;measurable proposed outcomes for the project;specific methods for evaluation of the success of the activity and for assessment of progress toward the goals to be achieved, anda budget commensurate with the proposed activity.The program particularly seeks unsolicited proposals for activities that are:novel and potentially transformative, in that they promise extraordinary outcomes;portable, in the sense that they potentially can be duplicated at other institutions;sustainable, meaning that the activity can be continued in the absence of external funding;likely to have large impact in terms of the numbers of trainees affected; andexemplary, in that they can serve as national models for education through research involvement.Proposers are advised to contact one of the cognizant program directors prior to submitting a proposal. The program has an annual submission window for unsolicited proposals of May 15 through June 15. Yale Clinical and Translational Science Award (U Component)

The Yale Center for Clinical Investigation (YCCI) was created in 2005 to advance Yale's clinical research mission. One year later, YCCI became the home of the Yale CTSA. At YCCIs inception, Yale was a national leader in T0-T2 translational research, basic/translational science training, and it supported distinctive translational science T3-T4 fellowship programs such as the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program. Since then, the CTSA has had a transformative impact linking all components of the Yale community in T1-T4 research, providing the central infrastructure for the effective conduct of ethical, innovative, rigorous, and reproducible research, and in training the next generation of research leaders. By any metric of scale, breadth, quality, and impact, both the CTSA's research enterprise and its educational mission have been enormously successful for Yale. This renewal application does not simply seek to maintain excellence, but to enable YCCI to drive the continued transformation of the Yale T1-T4 translational research mission and its predoctoral and postdoctoral training mission and to promote collaboration across CTSA hubs. First, it will support informatics and computational advances that drive the emergence of a learning health system. In so doing, it will draw on the Yale New Haven Health System, a six-hospital 2,681-bed consortium that provides more than 2.4 million outpatient visits annually from patients from upper Westchester county, throughout Connecticut, and southern Rhode Island. It will also prepare young scientists to draw on this infrastructure to conduct research that influences the future of healthcare. Second, it will support technological and scientific advances in areas that will support the emergence of personalized healthcare, including multi-omics and imaging. YCCI will provide pilot grant support and training to foster the development of research careers and research teams that can deepen our insights into pathophysiology and build toward personalized treatments. Third, it will engage a broader and multidisciplinary group of faculty, trainees, and community representatives to collaborate to improve health outcomes that constitute a major burden on patients, their families, and on public health. To support this mission, YCCI will also foster the development of careers in community-based research from a multidisciplinary group of young investigators and enhance the overall clinical research workforce.

Zambian Cohort of Healthy Aging and Dementia (ZCHAD) Study

Project Abstract Alzheimer’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease-Related Dementias (AD/ADRD) affect 51 million people worldwide, a prevalence expected to triple by 2050. Two-thirds of those with AD/ADRD live in low- and middle- income countries (LMICs) where the greatest growth in AD/ADRD prevalence is expected, but where services to diagnose and manage this condition are scarce and data regarding dementia burden are limited. Although the Lancet Commission on Dementia, Prevention, Intervention, and Care has identified 14 modifiable risk factors that contribute to 45% of AD/ADRD cases worldwide, there are limited data regarding the prevalence and role of these modifiable risk factors in LMICs. Thus, interventions targeting these factors may have limited impact on AD/ADRD risk in LMIC settings. This proposal’s overall objective is to assess the prevalence rate of AD/ADRD and associated risk factors among adults age ≥55 years in urban and rural Zambia, a LMIC in sub- Saharan Africa. Based on our pilot work, we hypothesize that the prevalence rate of AD/ADRD among adults age ≥55 years will be approximately 9.5% and prevalence of associated risk factors will differ between urban and rural participants. These hypotheses will be tested through a population-based study of adults age ≥55 years in the urban Lusaka and rural Mazabuka Districts of Zambia. AD/ADRD prevalence will be assessed using formal neuropsychological testing, participant, and informant report according to DSM-V criteria. Additional validated questionnaires, a physical examination, and laboratory investigations will assess AD/ADRD risk factors. This project will also build and expand the neuropsychiatric expertise and workforce necessary to conduct prospective AD/ADRD research by providing training and AD/ADRD research experience for a Zambian neuropsychologist, neuropsychologists-in-training, and a cohort of community health workers. The proposed research is highly innovative because it examines AD/ADRD prevalence in a population with limited existing data and expected growth in rates of AD/ADRD and associated risk factors. Knowledge gained from this work will determine (1) the prevalence of AD/ADRD and (2) the prevalence of modifiable risk factors which have the greatest impact on AD/ADRD prevalence in this rapidly aging population. This project will have a significant impact by expanding the capacity for AD/ADRD studies in Zambia and will lay the groundwork for the conduct of future longitudinal studies and trials assessing low-cost interventions to reduce AD/ADRD prevalence and improve patient care.
