About This Grant

The deregulation of autophagy and heightened inflammation has been implicated in dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness in elderly globally. This proposal will use a novel mouse model and human iPSC-derived RPE cells from controls and AMD risk allele containing donors to decipher a yet unknown role of the crosstalk between the organelle homeostasis/autophagy and inflammatory processes in the pathogenesis of dry AMD. We envisage that the proposed studies will help to develop strategies, potentially leading to novel therapies for this disease, which has no treatment available at the moment.
