About This Grant

Incarceration impacts a large proportion of people living in the United States. People who are incarcerated are more likely to experience disease and early mortality. Investment in improving systems of healthcare in criminal-justice settings are necessary to improve public health. The goal of this R13 application is to support scholarships and speakers at the annual Academic Consortium of Criminal Justice Health (ACCJH) conference. The ACCJH conference was first held in 2007 and brought together clinicians and researchers to improve healthcare in jails and prisons. Since that time, there has been increase in the number of people who attend the conference and deliberate outreach to people from outside of academia, including people with firsthand experience of incarceration. The ACCJH conference is one of the only national conferences that brings people from across the United States and globally to convene and discuss pressing issues in carceral health. This 2-day conference will focus on emerging topics at the intersection of incarceration and health. Scholarships provided by this grant will ensure that early investigators and people with firsthand experience of incarceration can attend. Speaker fees will allow for experts in the field to spend time sharing knowledge. The result of the ACCJH conference will continue to be networking opportunities, fertile ground for research development, and the opportunity to disseminate impactful research.
