Friends of Orquesta Northwest will organize a series of leadership development and cultural activities focused on Latinx culture. Mentors will be paired with community members to explore civic engagement and the arts at monthly workshops from September 2019 to May 2020 held at Casa Latina located at 317 17th Ave S. There will also be celebratory events featuring Latinx artists in November 2019, December 2019, February 2020, and May 2020 held at various Seattle locations to be determined.

Celebrating Seattle's Latinx Essential Workers

In celebration of the contributions of Seattle's Latinx essential workers during the Covid-19 epidemic, the Friends of Latinx Essential Workers will offer a series of online virtual productions and weekly internet radio shows in Spanish & English, featuring the stories of Seattle's Latinx essential workers, especially healthcare workers, retail cashiers, food service and construction workers, and including presentations by Latinx guest artists and speakers. The presentations will start in the fall of 2021 and continue through to Spring 2022.

Celebrating Dia de las Madres 2020

On May 10, 2020 the Friends of Dia de las Madres group will be hosting an event at Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute located at 104 17th Ave S from 2pm-4pm. A celebration of women and mothers on Mexico's Mother's Day, Latina artistic leaders, professional musicians, and volunteers will join with Friends of Dia des Madres and Orquesta Northwest to present a concert with performances of original music by María José Félix, in a world-premiere collaboration with Washington State Poet Laureate Claudia Castro Luna and of Mexican composer Manuel Ponce's first piano concerto by Daniela Liebman.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latino Cultural Heritage

The Friends of Ballard Orchestra will organize a classical concert series reflecting the theme of building community through music. The series will be a celebration of Latino and Hispanic cultural heritage. The concerts will be accompanied by instructional workshops for beginning and aspiring musicians in Seattle neighborhoods with limited access to classical music experiences. The concerts and the workshops will be open to the public and free of charge.
